3 Secrets for Shifting Back into a Flow State
Have you ever had the experience of being in a state of flow? …
When life just feels easier and lighter. You find yourself in the right place at the right time, you meet the right people who lead you to the conversations that relay the answers to the questions you’ve been having. Your intuition guides you from one activity to the next, and you feel bursts of creative inspiration that lead you to the next satisfying experience.
Life feels easy and relaxed in a state of flow, but how often do we actually get to experience that?
Stress is common to all humans, but how we choose to move through it drastically changes our perspective and life experiences.
Here are 3 energetic pointers to help you get back into a state of flow when you’re feeling overwhelmed or triggered.
1. Put your car into Neutral.
If you’ve ever driven a stick shift vehicle, you know that you have to get back into neutral before you shift gears. The same is true energetically. If you’re feeling stressed or anxious and you shift gears into another activity or distraction before “getting into neutral,” you end up carrying that same stress frequency into your next experience.
So how do you do it?
First, make a choice that you’re going to consciously shift how you feel. That in and of itself already starts changing your perspective from a narrow to a broader lens.
This next part has several options. Some things work better for some people more than others. The point is to become mindful of how you feel and your environment.
You can stop to listen to your surroundings, notice your breath, feel your hands and feet, notice the difference between the right and left side sensations of your body, or start naming objects in your surrounding environment … which leads me to the next tip.
2. Move in Slow Motion
Many of us instinctually panic under stress or emotional discomfort, leading to unhealthy habits like stress eating, binge watching TV and doom scrolling.
Try this out instead. It takes a little finesse and practice, so don’t give up on your first try.
When you feel emotional stress or physical discomfort, give yourself a little space to lean into it, with kindness. Identify where the emotion lives in your body (maybe shoulders, jaw, chest, low back, to name some common areas), and imagine that you are stretching out your experience of time with that emotion or sensation, like stretching out laffy taffy. Feel it in slow motion, and notice how your conscious awareness shifts it naturally without having to force any changes.
(This one is my favorite.) 3. Shift your Focus to Beauty
Hit the hard stop button and shift into noticing something beautiful in your surrounding. See if you can get on a roll, identifying the next beautiful thing and the next. Invite in curiosity and wonder, and invite your inner child to play in the delight of the things that you find uniquely beautiful. Notice how your mood and perspective start to shift. Give this exercise a try and let me know what you think!
